Rethinking the Finances and Safety of Single Use School Foodware

Though COVID-19 is at the forefront of everything right now there will be a day in the future when we will return to the day to day business of trying to reduce school waste and make sure that the foodware we use in schools is safe.  The CRRA K-12 Technical Council is looking ahead to that day by holding a webinar on those topics.

Joining us for what will surely be an engaging webinar will be Sue Chiang, Pollution Prevention Director for the Center for Environmental Health and Rebecca Navarro, Sustainability Program Manager for Palo Alto USD.  This webinar will explore the benefits of transitioning out of single-use foodware and into reusable foodware in schools as well as the health and environmental risks associated with toxic chemicals in single-use foodware.

Sue Chiang works with institutional purchasers from a wide range of sectors to harness their collective buying power to eliminate the use of harmful chemicals and expand the market for environmentally preferable products.  She is currently leading a project focused on getting PFAS, a hormone disrupting chemical, out of consumer products some of which are used in school foodware.

In her role as the Sustainability Program Manager at Palo Alto USD Rebecca Navarro has successfully led the District to transition out of single-use foodware to reusable foodware in 12 elementary schools.  Her program uses a central kitchen distribution model and despite the purchase of reusable baskets, stainless steel sporks, durable clamshells the program earned an annual net savings of $25,000.

Though organized by the CRRA K-12 Technical Council anyone can participate in this webinar.  These Webinars are free, but space is limited.  We kindly request that you be sure to register only if you are able to attend.
