CLIMATE SOLUTIONS COUNCIL VIRTUAL TOPIC LUNCH at CRRA2021

“Years after former Gov. Jerry Brown pledged California would launch its “own damn satellite” to track planet-warming pollutants, the state plans to put not one, but two satellites in orbit to help it hunt for hard-to-find “super-emitters” of methane and carbon dioxide.”

CRRA’s newly renamed Climate Solutions Council invites all attendees to our topic lunch presentation by Riley Duren, Chief Executive Officer of Carbon Mapper and Dr. Jorn Herner, California Air Resources Board, Research Planning, Administration & Emissions Mitigation Branch Chief.

ABOUT CARBON MAPPER

The California Air Resources Board and Jet Propulsion Laboratory began aerial flyovers detecting methane emissions in 2016. They found that ten California landfills were releasing methane at rates more than 225% higher than US EPA’s estimates. Landfills were the largest group methane “super-emitters”, accounting for 41% of measured emissions.

Now Carbon Mapper, Inc., a newly formed non-profit (501c3) entity is preparing to launch a series of satellites that will persistently track and pinpoint point-source emissions at individual facilities, using science-based methods to help accelerate mitigation action through:

  • Offering a methane leak detection service for operators to enable timely repairs
  • Contributing to methane intensity indicators to support market-based decarbonization of supply chains
  • Providing independent quantification of CO2 emissions from industrial facilities globally
  • Improving overall environmental situational awareness for governments, companies and civil society

Powered by philanthropy, Carbon Mapper has convened a broad unique coalition of private and public-sector actors with the combined expertise and resources to deploy a science-driven, sustained, and operational decision support service for maximum impact. Partners include Planet, NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory, the State of California, the University of Arizona, Arizona State University, Rocky Mountain Institute, and several philanthropic sponsors including High Tide Foundation and Bloomberg Philanthropies.
